6.0 is finally complete.
This is something I have been wanting to post for a while, but there was one loose end I needed to wrap up before posting. Let me back up for a bit.
A few months ago I finally scrapped my CMS and decided to rebuild the site from scratch. Luckily, I had everything archived and it was mostly just formatting correctly once the base HTML was set.
But there was one thing that I had decided to ignore, but this thing kept bugging me nontheless.
Fucking videos.
When I redesigned the site, I had one rule: HTML and (very basic) CSS only.
You see, the more shit you call, the "dirtier" your site gets. I wanted lean, clean lines in my HTML and CSS. I was very hesitant in considering Javascript.
But that was the one thing that would allow a lightbox to be generated when clicking on my videos.
The idea is to keep the user on the site. So if I am going to share my videos, I can't have the site shooting you over to YouTube when you click on the video.
Like many ideas, this one sat in my head (probably) for too long. Once it finally worked, all I had to do was update the podcast and gaming sections to reflect the updated Java and CSS.
Then: boom.
Magic.
With that final hurdle being overcome, I did get a stupid grin on my face since everything I had listed for this HTML site was finally complete.
With that being said, I did want to clear the air on a few things that has changed for anyone following my site since 2012.
As I had mentioned before, the two main sticky points was the site name and removing the CMS completely. I was very proud when I registered teamroberto. But looking back at it now, that name was hot trash.
It sounded fucking stupid 15+ years later.
Once I switched to ro-berto, it just sounded better.
Clean as fuck.
I did have to sort the domain folder, but nothing major. Then, after a few weeks of getting down and dirty with HTML and CSS it was done.
Now, on to the main reason why I wanted to type this up:
When working on projects for as long as I have, it's wasy to dismiss the time and effort it took to put together. By having full control of my site, down to the last line of code and pixels, I can finally feel as the site is truly mine. I don't have to "hope" the site doesn't break.
That being said, once everything was laid out, I did make a few drastic changes.
Before, each blog post had at least 3 images in it. I would also link to as many sources as possible in order to make the post more engaging and entertaining.
Well, I slowly started to realize that the post I spent three plus hours formatting with links would suddenly break. This was because the sources I would link to (videos, images, other sites, etc.) would be taken offline.
Maybe the webmasters decided to stop hosting their sites for what ever reason. Well, that made my shit (now) link to broken links.
I. HATE. SHIT. LIKE. THAT.
The reason is, it makes my stuff feel "cheap" and "broken" because my dumb ass is making you click on a link that will send you nowhere.
So I decided to stop linking off-site and only link to my images and videos since I am the one hosting them.
This basically means my shit will never send you to a site that does not exist.
It might make me sound like a jerk, but I want my stuff to look and feel epic.
Just like Nine Inch Nails.
After talking to my dealer (tech dealer), I realized there are two more things I want to add.
The first is the ability to show code.
Well, that one is pretty straight forward:
/* - - C O D E B O X - - */
pre {
background-color: #0E0E0E;
border: 1px solid #ddd;
border-left: 3px solid #f36d33;
padding: 15px;
overflow-x: auto; /* Adds a horizontal scrollbar if the code is too long */
}
code {
font-family: Inconsolata, sans-serif;
}
^ I added a code box, this is the code that actually styles it.
The second would be showcasing 3D models.
For the past couple of projects, I have been neglecting my 3D in order to try different things such as web design, server hosting (gaming and media), etc.
After being away for so ling, I think it's time to pivot back to my original crack:
The sweet, beautiful embrace of polygons, vertices and edges.
But before I even try to figure that one out, I have to dust off this rust and get down with some blender.
Sounds good to me.
